As part of our commitment to supporting and funding the earliest of startups through our Seed Program, Verizon Ventures is excited to announce our partnership with Techstars, Ford, and Magna International to launch Techstars Mobility, driven by Detroit. This three month accelerator begins next summer and will create a hub for transportation and mobility innovation in metro Detroit for ten groundbreaking teams.
2015 marks the fourth year of our relationship with Techstars, but this program is the deepest and most exciting one to date, in an area that is near and dear to our hearts at Verizon: Telematics.
Sitting at the intersection of wireless communications, location technology, and in-vehicle sensors, telematics applications help manage the emerging Internet of (moving) Things. With connected devices and smartphones residing alongside vehicles like planes, trains, ships and automobiles, telematics companies can enable new vehicle interactions with infrastructure, data, and people (Our portfolio company Apio is a great example of this Situational Awareness).
Although there is enormous momentum in the IoT market, it’s a complex frontier for founders to build a new company around, and with the massive rush for global opportunities there are a lot of unknowns. That’s why we’re bringing in the experts to jumpstart the teams at Techstars Mobility by joining forces with Verizon Telematics. They will provide the engineering brainpower, technology platforms and IoMT mentoring to Techstars’ newest community of emerging companies and we’re excited to be working with them.
We are seeing the beginnings of how telematics can change our lives (I send my wife a real time views of my commutes home using our portfolio company Glympse) and we at Verizon Ventures are looking forward to powering a (very near) future of driverless cars, intelligent routing, safer and greener cities, and new consumer and enterprise enablement.
So come be a part of Techstars Mobility: Driven by Detroit! A city and culture poised to deliver that future, reinvigorated by innovation and entrepreneurship…and supported whole heartedly by Verizon Ventures, Verizon Telematics, Ford, Magna, and this UofM alum.
