Verizon Explores How IoT Could Impact Transportation

From Internet-connected sensors to wearables, the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to be a relevant conversation that is associated with billions of devices and trillions of dollars. Last month Verizon Enterprise Solutions published a report on how IoT is transforming business results and increasing the adoption of IoT-enabled solutions. It’s a topic that is explored across the Verizon community and a recent piece published by Verizon Wireless News highlights the opportunities IoT provides in the transportation industry.

Here are some ways IoT is saving fuel, ensuring safety and reducing carbon footprint:

  • Smart Parking Apps: Embedded sensors in parking lots communicate with your smartphone to direct you to the nearest opening
  • Connected Tracking Devices: Such devices monitor locations, speeds and overall safety history of new drivers or to curb bad habits behind the wheel
  • GPS Navigation Apps: Avoid traffic jams by finding alternate routes
  • Solar-Powered Sensors on Trash Bins: Determine if amount of garbage inside justifies sending trucks to empty bins
