Verizon Ventures Invests in MapD to Deliver Data Analytics at Light Speed

It’s an all-too-common problem in today’s business landscape  companies are flooded with big data, but don’t have the tools and resources available to efficiently turn that data into insights. Businesses are either spending hours on end crunching raw data or are forced to turn to complex Hadoop-scale infrastructures to get answers to their most pressing business questions.

We’re excited to announce our investment in MapD, a company that is tackling this data deluge head on. The brainchild of CEO Todd Mostak came to be while he was working on his Harvard thesis and was forced to wait days for a single query that analyzed millions of Tweets to run. Fed up with the long wait times associated with these searches, he set out to create MapD, a big data exploration platform that uses GPUs to speed up big data analytics. MapD’s  mission is to not just make queries faster, but to create an immersive visualized data exploration experience that removes the disconnect between an analyst and their data.

The MapD database intelligently partitions, compresses, and caches data across all GPUs, meaning users just see up to 100X faster SQL, no indexing or optimizations required. Likewise, the company’s visualization platform provides the ability to effortlessly build interactive cross-filtered dashboards, leveraging server rendering when necessary to allow instant visualization of millions of points.

“By reducing the time it takes to analyze and visualize data from hours to milliseconds, we’re enabling organizations to spend significantly less time crunching data and more time analyzing it and making important decisions based on that data,” said Todd Mostak, founder and CEO of MapD.  “MapD’s orders of magnitude speed advantage will be hugely beneficial to industries and organizations where real-time decision making is critical.”

We look forward to working with MapD as they continue to help businesses analyze their data at lightning speed.
