Inside the Portfolio: Skyward

Our portfolio companies deserve recognition for the strong values and cultural uniqueness they embody. We’ve created a new “Inside the Portfolio” blog series that highlights the incredible work environments these companies have built, and our first installment focuses on the highly curious, enthusiastic drone experts at Skyward.

Skyward is a drone operations management platform company built by experts in computer science, GIS, aviation, and communication. They’ve created one of the first information management solution designed for commercial drone operators. The cloud-based software integrates a drone airspace map with flight planning tools and a digital system of record, designed with input from regulatory and operational experts.

Taking Culture to New Heights

Skyward’s team is comprised of curious and enthusiastic individuals that live and work by four core values: Audacity, Integrity, Results, and Empathy. They have a lot of respect for each other’s expertise and the value that each individual brings beyond their job description. Because the drone industry is still new and rapidly growing, they are highly committed to their customers and advancing the drone industry. They are always looking for ways to support and create new solutions for their customers, and each team member takes ownership for their customers’ long-term success.

Skyward’s riverfront, dog-friendly office in downtown Portland is casual in attire but serious about big ideas. They often celebrate the end of a results-driven workday with a glass of whiskey or wine and enthusiastic conversations among colleagues from various teams. Company off-site events include both productive team time and some out-of-the box activities. Past events include whitewater rafting, pickle ball competitions, and of course, drone flying. Watch the dronie (a drone selfie) from their last offsite here.

Perks and Benefits

Skyward recognizes the exceptional work of employees through a “turn of the prop” (plane propeller) at their monthly all-hands meeting. Managers and coworkers nominate fellow team members who excelled at a project or achieved an exemplary accomplishment. The executive team then selects one nomination and the winner is rewarded with a “prop turn” and a flight in a private plane with Skyward CEO Jonathan Evans. Watch the highlights from a turn-of-the-prop adventure captured by Lead QA Engineer, Ken Andrew.

All employees are also given a “drone allowance” to purchase their own personal drone and encouraged to join the “Skyward Flight Club” for recreational flying.
