Verizon Ventures is excited to announce John Doherty, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Verizon Ventures, has been named to the 2018 “Powerlist” by Global Corporate Venturing (GCV) for the second year in a row. In 2017, John was named as a top 100 finalist, but in 2018 climbed to #12.
John is a key member of the Verizon Ventures team and responsible for Verizon’s corporate strategy, leading joint ventures, acquisitions and investments. Under his leadership, Verizon Ventures manages more than 50 active portfolio companies in the emerging tech market in spaces such as smart cities and transportation, digital media, advanced networks, IoT and more. In 2017, Verizon Ventures made 33 investment announcements, which in aggregate raised more than $450 million, as well as added 12 new companies to its portfolio including Brit + Co, ClipCall, Open Garden, PlaySight, Iguazio, 8i, Renovo, the R/GA Media Tech Venture Studio, and Optibus.
John draws on both strategy and execution from Verizon Venture to help parent company Verizon through a number of deals, such as the acquisition of portfolio company Skyward. Currently, more than 25 portfolio companies are actively working with Verizon’s business units through technological collaboration, commercial agreements and/or partnerships. Earlier this year, Merav Rotem-Naaman, Managing Director at Verizon Ventures Israel, was also named a 2018 GVC “Rising Star,” which represent one percent of investors who are considered among the brightest prospects and who are driving change across the industry.
